Puerto Vallarta is located on the Bay of Banderas, one of the most beautiful natural bays in the world. We strongly recommend at least one excursion on the bay. There are day tours that cruise the bay, allow snorkeling opp's, time at a remote private beach and cruise back to the marina past all of the fabulous hotels and downtown.
While the beaches in the collective Vallarta areas are perfectly suitable for swimming we must caution that you are now on the Pacific side of Mexico. The waters are not quite as calm, or transparent as they are on the Gulf or Cancun side. Temperatures are also a few degrees cooler as a result of the Pacific Ocean. Beaches in the Riviera Nayarit area are a bit sandier and have fewer rocks than the Puerto Vallarta area. You will enjoy long stretches of uninterrupted beaches no matter where your hotel is located. These are some of the best beaches anywhere for those long walks.
Riviera Nayarit, located just to the north in the state of Nayarit, is the area emerging with spectacular new built resorts such as Grand Velas, Marival Residences, the Riu hotels, Hard Rock, Hyatt; and Iberostar in Punta Mita.
