Croatia for History, Stunning Scenery, Value, and even Game of Thrones

Recently Croatia has landed in the homes of many of us thanks to the popularity of HBO's "Game of Thrones." Dubrovnik, Croatia has served a location for many of the iconic scenes features on the popular show. Of course the locals have served as extras many times over.
But there is much more to Croatia than a TV show. Let's start with Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To say Dubrovnik is picturesque would not begin to do justice. We are sharing a few of Justin's photos throughout this blog.

Dubrovnik is resilient, as witnessed by its survival of the civil war of 1991 that damaged much of this breathtaking town. Bullet holes are still prevalent in the walls of Old Town. Despite this, Dubrovnik has has retained most of its Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. You can actually walk the ancient wall that surrounds the city that features views of the sea and the famed brick-red city roofs, just as Justin did. The entire walk is just over a mile.
To take in even more dramatic views ride the Dubrovnik Cable Car to the summit of Srd Hill. And while shopping in Dubrovnik is a must, let us point out what a value Dubrovnik is. Your dollar will go far here, so shop away and eat and drink to your hearts content. It is a surprisingly great value.

Wine lovers will have to check out a tour of the Saints Hills Winery, in an 18th century country manor. Value? The wine tasting of five wines and tapas cost less than $20. And a four-course meal with wine runs about $60.
If you can pull yourself away from this town hop on a ferry to the nearby island of Korcula. it's old town is like an outdoor museum featuring the Cathedral Sveti Marko and St. Mark's Square. Plus a beautifully restored bell tower and nice beaches.
Croatia has so much more to offer. There is the beauty of Plitvice Lakes National Park which connects the inland part of Croatia with the Adriatic. It is a collection of lakes cascading down towards the lower sea elevations. You've got some great Roman treasures still preserved from their time ruling the area. The Pula Arena is the only remaining Roman amphitheatre to have four side towers and all three Roman architectural orders entirely preserved. The arena is still used today and can hold up to 12,500. In the town center of Split there is Diocletian's Palace with it's many treasures. The Adriatic is home to over 1,000 Croatian islands to leave you plenty to explore while on the sea, whether on a boat you rent or on a ferry. Needless to say there is plenty to see and do while in Croatia.
